Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor
Building Queensland is leading the development of a Detailed Business Case for the Townsville Eastern Access Rail Corridor (TEARC) in partnership with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
TEARC is a proposed new freight rail link connecting the Mount Isa Line and North Coast Line, through the Townsville State Development Area to the Port of Townsville. The project is expected to meet future demand and improve efficiencies. It is also expected to enhance regional development and improve Townsville’s community amenity.
As part of the Detailed Business Case, Building Queensland has developed a project reference design and is continuing to investigate a range of factors to assess TEARC’s feasibility, including:
- current and projected freight traffic demand
- integration with the Port of Townsville’s rail network
- current and projected mining demand—particularly from the North West Minerals Province
- alignment with state and federal strategic plans and priorities
- potential economic benefits, including wider economic benefits
- environmental considerations
- social impacts to Townsville.
The completed Business Case is expected to be delivered to government in Q4 2017.

Smithfield Transport Corridor Upgrade

The proposed Nullinga Dam site is located on the Walsh River in the Atherton Tablelands and has been proposed as a future water supply to serve growing urban demand in Cairns and to stimulate irrigated agriculture in the region, by supplementing existing supplies.
