The condition of the Edmonton to Gordonvale corridor on the Bruce Highway is considered to be deteriorating, resulting in reduced traffic efficiency, flood immunity and potential safety implications. Furthermore, there are limited opportunities for cyclists to safely share the road with motorists.

The Edmonton to Gordonvale corridor spans approximately 10 kilometres of the Bruce Highway (Innisfail to Cairns), and forms part of the southern approaches to the built up area of Cairns. Several options are being considered to improve the condition of the road to be ‘as new’ and ‘fit for purpose’. Options being investigated include separation of opposing flows, rationalisation of existing at-grade intersections, installation of grade‑separated intersections, removal of direct access to the highway and installation of active transport facilities, including dedicated paths and highway crossings. The scope of the proposal will include assessment of existing assets for re-use where possible.
