An upgrade and expansion of the convention centre is proposed to meet potential unmet demand for national and international conventions in Cairns. Further, there may be opportunity to leverage the proposed upgraded and expanded convention centre with other anticipated precinct developments, such as the State Government’s planned Global Tourism Hub, to enhance state and regional economic outcomes.

The project could facilitate additional national and international conventions for Cairns with resultant economic benefits for the region and state.

The convention centre currently consists of a range of exhibition halls, meeting rooms and associated facilities. The proposed expansion of the convention centre seeks to provide additional exhibition and meeting facilities to cater for an increase in patrons.

NOTE: The preliminary business case has been completed and is being progressed.
