Date of Publication: July 2016
The new generation ‘mega-class’ cruise ships are unable to access the Port of Cairns without developing the Port infrastructure to accommodate that size of vessel.
The objective is to improve shipping access by developing Port infrastructure to accommodate new classes of cruise vessels.
The scope of proposed works includes channel widening, swing basin and berth dredging, as well as wharf and services works to cater for larger cruise ships and also enable growth for HMAS Cairns.
Ports North is currently preparing an extensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) aimed at increasing cruise and other shipping access to the Port of Cairns. This work includes completing cruise ship demand analysis, channel design review, dredge material treatment, cost, environmental, and economic benefit assessment.
The EIS declaration lapse date has been amended from 31 March 2016 to 30 June 2017 to allow the EIS to be further developed for scope revisions.
Complete Preliminary Evaluation.
