Potential future urban water demand in the Cairns area and the stimulation of irrigated agricultural growth in the region may require water storage augmentation.

Nullinga Dam has been proposed as a new water supply to service future urban water demand for the Cairns area and stimulate irrigated agriculture in the region by supplementing existing irrigation water supply.

A Preliminary Business Case is currently underway for a preferred water supply option. The Preliminary Business Case will consider the potential need for augmented water supply for Cairns and irrigated agriculture and will consider a range of options including:

  • augmenting/enhancing the existing water supply system
  • optimising water trading within the catchment and ‘repurposing’ current water allocations
  • converting water losses from existing water transport infrastructure (e.g. transfer channels) to a new water allocations
  • construction of Nullinga Dam.
