Proposal Stage of Development: Preliminary Business Case Underway
Planned Stage End Date: Q4 2016
Date of Publication: December 2016 (for period 4 June 2016 – 3 December 2016)

The infrastructure at Toowoomba Hospital is operating at capacity in a number of areas, and the hospital currently faces extended emergency department waiting times, emergency department overcrowding and adverse impacts on care offered. Forecast demand, driven by a growing and ageing population and high levels of chronic disease, is expected to place further pressure on the hospital.

The objectives of the proposal are to:

  • provide capacity to address extended waiting times and meet treatment targets
  • improve the quality of care for all patients, and improve the provision of culturally appropriate spaces for the high number of Aboriginal Australians, Torres Strait Islanders and humanitarian migrants in the region
  • provide increased renal service capacity.

Options being investigated include a combination of a new build and refurbishment of existing facilities.
