Overview
The First Nations Cultural Centre proposal is investigating the construction of a new cultural centre in Brisbane to showcase First Nations cultures from across Queensland.

STRATEGIC CONTEXT

The First Nations Peoples have contributed and continue to contribute to Queensland’s historical, creative and cultural landscapes. The Queensland Government has been building a First Nations art sector across the state through the landmark Backing Indigenous Arts initiative; however, there is currently no large scale, authentic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experience in Brisbane or Queensland.

An opportunity has been identified to provide greater recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture which will contribute to healing and provide engagement opportunities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. Furthermore, this opportunity will enable wider public education on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and culture, and support local tourism.

BUILDING QUEENSLAND ROLE

During the period to December 2020, Building Queensland’s role in assisting Arts Queensland in the early stages of developing the options analysis has concluded.

Building Queensland helped Arts Queensland to align their analysis with the Business Case Development Framework, while applying experience from other cultural centre infrastructure proposals.

This summary has been prepared consistent with s12(3), s13(2), s17(1)(b) and s17(1)(c) of the Building Queensland Act 2015 requiring Building Queensland to publish summaries where it has assisted an agency in the preliminary preparation of an infrastructure proposal during each six-month period.
